Alton is a small rural town in Belknap County, NH with a population of approximately 5,300. The town of Alton offers many recreational and cultural opportunities for residents and visitors alike. Alton was a popular destination by rail until 1935 with visitors coming to enjoy the natural beauty and resources of the town. Today, the antique train station in Alton Bay serves as the Community Center and is a pick up and drop off point for passengers on the M/S Mount Washington.
While the greatest attraction has been the pristine waters of Lake Winnipesaukee, there are many other places to visit and things to do in Alton. Mount Major, in the Belknap Mountain range, offers a great family hike and spectacular views. The Merrymeeting River has nature walks and kayaking, boating and fishing opportunities. Chuckster's in Alton Bay provides summer family fun with mini-golf and ice cream. Next door is SUPNH where kayaks and paddleboards rentals, tours and lessons are offered. Of course, winter activities abound with nearby Gunstock Mountain, miles of snowmobile trails (the Mount Major Snowmobile Club is one of NH's oldest clubs)and ice skating and ice fishing opportunities.
The Village of Alton is a quintessential New England Village with a broad main street dotted with small shops and eateries. A local favorite is Ackerly's Grill and Galley on Main Street, which has a variety of fresh seafood and streaks on the menu.
Alton Bay is a community within this lovely small lakeside town of Alton. As the name would indicate, Alton Bay is a cove at the southernmost tip of Lake Winnipesaukee. The M/S Mount Washington makes a port of call stop here in the summer months, during scenic cruises around the lake. The charming antique rail station serves as a gathering place for visitors in the summer months as they await their return trip on the Mount Washington. There is a marina and several B&Bs for visitors. Shibley's at the Pier is a popular restaurant serving American fare. With its' deck directly on the Lake and an antique marble bar and soda fountain it' a favorite for local residents and visitors alike. If cigars are of interest Winnipesaukee Cigar Company is located in the historic Bay Pavilion on Lake Winnipesaukee.
The Central School provides public education to children K-grade 8 and the recently constructed Prospect Mountain High School serves both Alton and Barnstead students. Brewster Academy in nearby Wolfeboro is a private preparatory school.
